Re: Microsoft Windows Update KB3078601 is giving errors in Crystal reports; 'Generic error occurred in GDI+'

Hi Fred,

I'm not trying to blame anyone, well maybe Microsoft lol, Exactly, it worked for 14 years in CR and then MS changed something and now it breaks CR.

This info suggests maybe an update to USP10.dll and GDIPlus dll's. USP10 does the UNICODE conversion and GDI (32bit Native Graphical Device Interface) does the font rendering in 32 bit app's like Notepad or any Windows programs and GDIPlus is used by the Windows Framework to do the same.

CR also uses the Glyphics with the font itself, may be the part that was secured...

As far as I know MS did not convert any of their Office or other applications to use the Framework so comparing what Notepad or other Office programs do is not a totally valid test. As far as I know MS doesn't use the Framework in any of their products.

Try writing a VS app that uses the Framework and simply print/displays the characters, does that work? Do not add any CR assemblies to the test app....

Can you do me a favour, because I can't replicate the issue, but I don't have that KBA on my main test image, I'll see if I can install it on a VM-ware image. Our IT department controls what we can install so it may not be allow to. Our VM Servers may...

What I would like to see is a Modules list from CR Designer and your application. What modules does is simply collect the list of all dll's the app is using, we can then compare and see what the differences are.

Unzip the attached file and rename to *.zip and then unzip it again. You should end up with a file called modules.exe.

Run both CRD and your app and collect a new list file and save it. Then rename the file to *.txt and then use the Advanced Editor option to attach. I would like to see what MS has updated. Using Modules we can compare files.

Our Developers are busy with updating the platform to get off of VS 2005 Compiler because it's end of life this year so this may be already fixed by using the VS 2015 compiler but we won't know until we do more testing. So far DEV has said they cannot duplicate the problem and only Barcode fonts was reported as being an issue so this is also new info.

The other thing that may be affecting your PC is some third party companies do have their own flavors of fonts. Are you absolutely sure your Arial font has not been updated? It's even possible you may have an infected version....

Thanks again

Don
