No dependent requirements will be generated by the variants, until sales orders are actually entered. In most companies, such dependent requirement generation is not adequate for planning purposes. That's why you place the forecasts against the Planning material. In the long term, dependent requirements are exploded from Planning Material forecasts. In the short term, the Planning material dependent requirements are typically replaced by dependent requirements generated by the variants.
If you actually need to see the exploded demand from the variants in strategy 60 (which in turn are generated only by sales), you would have to write a custom report.
If you need to have discreet forecasts against each of the variants throughout the entire planning horizon, then strategy 60 is not suitable.
